  • I would like to add my praise for the wonderful way in which the tour was organised. I too would like to say how safe I felt and the interaction between Kim and David and the tour group made every one feel at home. The fact that you booked us into other family businesses added to the feeling of "family" that was the signature of the trip. I will recommend your business whenever I get a chance and hope I can travel with you again.

  • I had a lovely holiday with all you fellow travellers, being a small group we got to know each other very well, even though some of us have known each other for many years but have reconnected! DAVID could make that bus dance and whirled us around all these mountains and corners in an amazing and very reassuring safe fashion. Thanks to you both, we just walked in to pre-arranged venues and received top treatment, with top meals and accommodation. I also liked the way you supported family owned businesses who you returned to. Fully recommended company!

ITINERARY

DAY 1 – HOME TO ROXBY DOWNS

June 2020

Welcome to our Outback Adventure featuring Roxby Downs, Marree, Lake Eyre and the stunning Flinders Ranges. Sit back, relax and get to know your fellow travellers as our 8-day tour awaits. We have a travel day ahead, stopping for convenience breaks and to purchase lunch. We stop in Woomera, home to the testing site of long-range missiles and rockets. It remains the largest land-based range in the world and we have a chance to discover its interesting history at the Heritage Centre. Later, we arrive Roxby Downs for our first night on tour together.

(lunch at own expense/ dinner in hotel)
Roxby Downs Motor Inn (subject to availability).

Day 2 – ROXBY DOWNS

June 2020

Today we discover Olympic Dam, home to one of the most “hi-tech” mining operations in the world. We have a briefing at the Roxy Cultural Precinct before our mine tour (dependent on availability*). The Whenan Shaft, the huge surface “decline” which permits access by miners and equipment to many kilometres of tunnels, 500 metres below and the Metallurgical Plant (the only one of its kind in Australia), are just a few of the features of this giant gold, silver, copper and uranium mining complex. After our tour we enjoy lunch before free time in the afternoon.

(breakfast & dinner in hotel / lunch included)
Roxby Downs Motor Inn (subject to availability) *Tour is on a Wednesday 9am-12pm only

DAY 3 – ROXBY DOWNS TO MARREE

June 2020

Make sure you pack a book today as we have a travel day ahead of us. Stopping for convenience stops and to enjoy our picnic lunch we express to Marree. The town is famous for being the junction of the legendary Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks. Once a thriving centre for transport and communications, relics of a bygone era remain. Aboriginal people, Afghan cameleers and Europeans once lived in relative harmony as the fortunes of the town ebbed and flowed over time. The local Marree Pub – like so many in remote parts of Australia – is the social centre of the community – and that is where we will be staying for 3 nights. It’s an ideal base for our flight over Lake Eyre and it’s a great spot to meet some of the locals and learn about their community. Tonight, make sure you look up into the night sky, it’s like a blanket of stardust and twinkly stars. It’s a true outback experience.

(breakfast & dinner in hotel / packed lunch included).
Marree Hotel Motel (subject to availability)

Day 4 – LAKE EYRE

June 2020

Bring your camera as this morning we take to the skies for an incredible scenic flight over Lake Eyre. This amazing Basin covers almost one-sixth of Australia and is one of the world’s largest internally draining river systems. Our plane then turns to the Painted Hills, an area swathed in a variety of earthy outback colours and are only accessible and visible by air. The flight will be conducted at a height low enough to experience the intricate details of the beautifully eroded shelf that once belonged to the great inland sea.

(breakfast & dinner at hotel / lunch at William Creek Hotel).
Marree Hotel Motel (subject to availability)

DAY 5 – MARREE TOURING

June 2020

This morning we are taken on a guided tour of Marree before taking a drive north along the Birdsville Track – arguably the most iconic dirt road in Australia. Just north of Marree are the Lake Harry ruins. More than 100 years ago, after a bore had been drilled, a date palm plantation was established here. Although the date trees grew successfully, up to 2000 date palms stood there in the 1930s, the project failed due to the lack of bees to pollinate the trees. The Outback has reclaimed its land and only the ruins remind of these days. Just beyond here is the Dingo Fence which meanders 5400 kilometres from the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight throughout Outback South Australia and NSW to the coast north of Brisbane. We return to the Marree Hotel for our lunch today.

(breakfast, lunch & dinner at hotel).
Marree Hotel Motel (subject to availability)

DAY 6 – MARREE TO FLINDERS RANGES

June 2020

We meet our local guide, for an insider’s tour of this stunning National Park. The Flinders Ranges are well known for their wild flowers but it’s the dramatic gorges and spectacular peaks that are the real highlights of this beautiful part of Australia. We will visit two gorges (subject to weather and road conditions), Brachina Gorge and Razerback Lookout. We then visit Gumcreek Station for lunch. This afternoon we travel to historic town, Blinman to experience the Underground Mine Tour. The tour offers a unique journey into the heart of the unique copper mine. With the installation of an innovating sounds and light system, we will be transported back in time to the lives of the miners who worked here between 1862 and 1907. We complete our outback experience with Stokes Hill Sundowners to observe the ever-changing colours of sunset over Wilpena Pound with refreshing predinner drinks and canapés. Marvel at this vast ancient landscape from a spectacular local viewing location and don’t forget your camera! We head back to the Resort for dinner.

DAY 8 – FLINDERS RANGES TO HOME

June 2020

We farewell the Flinders Ranges and begin our journey home. We cross the famed Goyders Line that was marked on the map by Surveyor General George Woodroffe Goyder to delineate drought affected country. This line became important both in settlement planning of the state and as an indicator of the limits of the land considered safe for agricultural development. As we see from many of the fascinating ruins on the Wilochra Plain, such as Kanyaka Homestead, many early settlers didn’t take his advice. We arrive home from our outback adventure feeling delighted to have travelled to one of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in the country.

(breakfast & dinner at hotel / lunch in Port Augusta).
